In Part One of Jill’s Silk Painting Workshop, Jill explains the variety of tools and materials you will need to enjoy silk painting. Next Jill explores the difference between silk paints and silk dyes (iron fix versus steam fix silk paints). Jill dives into the workshop with her favorite natural hair brush and explores silk painting with water, alcohol, salt and sugar. Next it’s on to everyone’s favorite — working with gutta resist on silk to create where you can apply a variety of colors. Jill is a master of gutta demonstration on silk and she provides a lot of gutta silk painting techniques including blending colors, work with water for flow and using colored gutta for design and effect.

Once we have learned the basic techniques it’s time to move on to Part Two of our Silk Painting workshop, where Jill explores more of her favorite silk painting techniques in a variety of demonstrations. Jill is an advanced batik artist and her work in batik wax resist on silk is a wonderful addition to this workshop. Looking for something more? Jill moves on to taking color out (discharge) of the silk, using anti-spread on the silk to create a painterly canvas, and thickened silk dyes with stamps, brushes and other effects. Once we have created a body of work with all of the demonstrations, Jill concludes the workshop with steam fixing your silks — both on the stove and using commercially available appliances.
