Stitched textiles offer opportunities for widely diverse textures and surfaces. While there is no official ‘fashion’ in this area it is undoubtedly true that there are trends in evidence at many exhibitions. Although textural surface stitching may not always be obvious, stitch is widely used for construction, manipulation and mark.
Since the origins of stitched textiles, ‘embellishment’ has been used to celebrate special people or occasions. Hierarchies, both secular and religious, have been recognized and adorned with decorated cloths, rank badges or sumptuous garments as a mark of respect and awe.
In the wider world of fashion and interiors there is certainly a sense that decorative sources are informing contemporary trends. Perhaps we should consider the option to work in a more dramatic and decorative way when the idea demands and not hold back because it seems not to be mainstream.
We have frequently suggested looking at textiles from other cultures for inspiration and there are many that could be used as starting points but British textile traditions have marvelous examples of ‘over the top’ opulence and richness with restraint.
This book offers exciting opportunities for decorating and adorning fabric surfaces using an embellishing machine, hand and machine stitching, beading and other mixed media.
